How to Memorize Scripture

Memorizing anything takes time and discipline! You have not accepted an easy task, but it will be a rewarding one to those who stay the course. Your experience in this class will not be soon forgotten. In order for you to be successful, you MUST discipline your mind, your time and your actions! Here are some suggestions to help you in your undertaking. Try them all and stick with the ones that work for you!

  1. Say the verse or passage OUT LOUD at least 20 times. Look at the verse and read it word for word the first few times. Then, each time you repeat it, try to go a little further without looking back. Do this until you have every word perfect.
  2. WRITE the verse repeatedly (20-30 times)! Think back to when you had to write sentences as a child. Most likely you still remember what you had to write! Try it!
  3. THINK about the verse each time you say it. Psychologists tell us that we remember best first by paying attention, then by repetition.
  4. APPLY the verse to your life. Write down the verse and then an application below it. Keep it in a notebook as a class journal.
  5. PRAY a thought to God generated from the verse. It may be a praise, thanksgiving, asking for forgiveness, for help, repentance, etc.
  6. PRACTICE the verse until you can write it word for word perfectly without looking
  7. Have a FRIEND or FAMILY MEMBER help you when possible and appropriate.
  8. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW!!!

When to do Memorization Work

  1. Pick a RELAXED and stress free time of day (this may require a great effort)!
  2. Be FLEXIBLE!
  3. PLAN the time! Don't expect to be successful without a definite plan!
  4. At the same time, make use of DOWN TIME at work, school or around the house. Five minutes here and there really tends to add up!
  5. Be CONSISTENT in doing some work EVERY DAY! If you only have 10-15 minutes per day, DO IT! QUALITY work is more important than quantity!
